George Hudson – The Railway King 1800 – 1871. In Politics and Business he had powerful and influential friends even the Prime Minister and Duke of Wellington. George Stephenson joined him in some business adventures. As a sidetrack to the Railways, Hudson built the Royal Hotel and most of the boarding houses on the West Cliff in the 1840’s, as the Railways were bringing in Tourists, but he never finished the Royal Crescent due to a lack of funds. He was sent to York Castle as a debtor in 1865, but friends raised the money for his release in 1866 and he retired to London.
