The room is named after Caedmon
Caedmon was a herdsman who worked on the Abbey lands at the time of Hilda in the 7th Century. It seems that Caedmon, an elderly man, was not musical or gifted with words but, following a dream, he found he could sing and create verse. He is remembered now as Whitby’s most famous poet. The Celtic-Style cross in St Mary’s church yard was dedicated to his memory in 1898.
